Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling initial decline in Japan and small opening gain in Hong Kong. Australia weaker in initial trade. Overnight, European equities saw broad declines amid ramp in US-EU trade tensions. US contracts remain lower before resumption of trade on Tuesday. Australian bonds under some pressure. FX markets steady after dollar saw biggest declines against euro and sterling. Precious and industrial metals maintaining strong Monday gains while crude remains slightly higher. Bitcoin sold off to one-week low.
Renewed ramp in trade tensions weighing on risk sentiment early in the week after President Trump threatened tariffs on EU amid standoff over Greenland. Speaking to NBC News Trump vowed to proceed with tariffs and made no comment when asked whether he would order military invasion of Greenland. Press discussions have featured potential EU retaliatory actions including use of anti-coercion instrument and selling US assts, though there is also talk about preventing further escalation.
China expected to keep loan prime rates unchanged with hold expectations reinforced by last week's decision to cut rates on structural policy tools. However, Deputy Governor Zou's remarks that central bank has room to cut RRR and interest rates this year also supported expectations of possible cut to policy rate in Q1. Comes after China Q4 GDP growth slowed to weakest in three years, while December activity was generally weaker with retail sales growth missing, fixed asset investment declines deepening and property metrics worsening.
