    • Geopolitical developments weighing on sentiment. Trade tensions ratchet high after Trump threatened tariffs on countries that don't support US advances to take control of Greenland. EU reportedly considering revival of €93B in counter-levies on US in potential breakdown in EU-US trade deal. US pharmas separately weighing withholding new drug releases in Europe as pressure tactic for higher prices. China telecoms back in firing line with EU preparing proposal to phase out Chinese equipment from critical infrastructure.

    • Quiet start to the week for Europe on the macro data calendar. Final Eurozone CPI revised down from flash to 1.9% y/y in December. Heavy UK data schedule kicking off on Tuesday with labor market update and Wednesday's sees CPI update. Update from property portal Rightmove showed UK average asking prices for new homes rose by 2.8% m/m in four weeks to 10-Jan; biggest increase for any month since 2015 - after 1.8% fall in previous four weeks. IMF January updated forecast 2026 global GDP at 3.3% versus prior 3.1%, left 2027 GDP unchanged at 3.2%.

    • On the reporting front, few names posted their most recent numbers, including ASM International (ASM.NA), PolyPeptide Group (PPGN.SW) and Ageas (AGS.BB), with the latter also raising its FY guidance. Elsewhere, the US Supreme Court decided to review the Durnell case in the Bayer (BAYN.GR) Roundup litigation, now expecting a decision on merits during 'the 2026 session ending Jun-26.

    • In M&A, Zurich Insurance Group (ZURN.SW) submited an improved proposal to acquire Beazley (BEZ.LN) for 1,280p/sh in cash ( prior offer 1,230p/sh); Beazley board has not yet had the chance to consider the improved proposal received.
