StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.76%, Hang Seng Futures +0.24%, ASX SPI 200 +0.63%, S&P Futures +0.15%

Jan 21 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Thursday trade following tamping down of US-EU geopolitical tensions. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures extending gains afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening in-line with overnight rebound in Treasuries. FX markets steady after dollar stabilized following preceding sell-off. Gold unchanged after strengthening to fresh record high. Crude little changed. Bitcoin flat after staging modest rebound.

    • Recovery in risk sentiment after Trump backed off from threat to slap tariffs on EU and announced "framework" agreement on Greenland. Details scarce with deal appearing to fall short of Trump's earlier demand for ownership, though avoids market's worst-case scenario of tit-for-tat trade war escalation. Reversal not altogether surprising given preceding discussions about reemergence of TACO narrative and Trump following familiar 'escalate-to-deescalate' playbook. Earlier, Europe moved to suspend work on finalizing US-EU trade deal, though this wasn't much of a market overhang.

    • In economic developments, South Korea GDP unexpectedly contracted in Q4 against expectations for small growth, marking first negative print in three quarters. Main drag came from sharp slowdown in consumption, and contraction in investment and exports. Coming up, Australian employment data forecast to show rebound in headline jobs growth following November's surprise drop. Unemployment rate forecast to have edged higher. Japan trade data also slated for release.
