Jan 22 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open mostly higher Friday. Futures in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea traded higher, while Australia edged lower. Japan ADRs were skewed to losses while Golden Dragon China index rose a sharp 1.58%. US contracts slightly softer after cash session extended gains though finished off best levels. Tech leads were positive mostly in terms of breadth as SOX index rose a mild 0.16% despite broad-based gains in big tech. However, Intel (INTC) sold off after hours on soft Q1 guidance. Treasuries were mixed with some curve flattening. Dollar index was down 0.5%, finishing near worst levels. Gold finished up 1.6%, at a fresh record above $4,900/oz. Bitcoin futures were off 0.7%. WTI crude settled down 2.1%, moving back below $60/barrel.

    • Follow-through recovery in sentiment widely credited to the TACO dynamic after Trump softened his stance on Greenland and more details around NATO deal emerge. Yet, while Dow index has returned to Friday's levels, dollar index remains depressed while US 10y yield remains elevated, leaving most of the 'sell-US' scars intact. Geopolitics heading back into a constructive direction with EU expected to resume the process to ratify a US trade deal, though now may face a more challenging path due to lingering caution following Greenland developments. Better US data also helping to normalize the narrative around fundamentals. Small-cap outperformance standing out, outpacing S&P 500 for a 14th straight session, most since 1996. Latest batch of earnings offered some positive takeaways, though some declines fit with high bar while market looking ahead to Big Tech results next week.

    • Key focus in Asia on the BOJ meeting. While rates widely expected to remain unchanged, more of the attention going to Governor Ueda's press conference particularly for views on the recent surge in JGB yields. Political developments also posing new perspective on BOJ policy in light of an earlier than expected snap election (lower house dissolution to proceed today ahead of an 8-Feb vote) and consumption tax cuts quickly emerging as a key battleground. BOJ set to overshadow attention on nationwide CPI, which was in line, and PMI data. Meanwhile, PBOC Governor Pan reaffirmed an easing stance, repeating there is room to cut RRR and rates. Press sources indicated China will likely adopt a 2026 growth target range of 4.5-5.0%, affirming a recent shift in economist sentiment after early indications pointed to keeping the target at around 5%. Elsewhere, New Zealand Q4 CPI came in mostly in line.
