Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Japan and muted start in Hong Kong. Australia closed for public holiday. S&P 500 futures weakening after US stocks logged small weekly decline. Yenstrength the big story in FX markets with dollar also weakening against euro. Corresponding with another rally in metals with gold topping $5K for first time and silver rallying above $100. Crude coming off highs. Bitcoin under pressure, down to mid-December lows.
Sentiment cautious ahead of the trading week as markets navigate multiple risk events. Speculation about joint action to prop up yen driving early week volatility across FX and commodity markets. Eventful week coming up on macro and micro front with Fed expected to hold while Australia Q4 CPI could firm expectations of an RBA rate hike next month. MSFT, Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) among tech firms set to report earnings. Trade tensions continue to hover in background after Trump threated fresh tariffs against Canada.
Market on watch for yen intervention after press sources noted NY Fed conducted rate check, in potential prelude to joint US-Japan action to support currency. PM Takaichiechoed verbal warnings from Finance Minister Katayama, telling Japan TV on Sunday that authorities will take necessary steps against speculative market moves. Developments have driven rebound in yen with USDJPY backing down towards lowest since Nov-2025, putting it further away from 160-level that had been mentioned as potential intervention trigger.
In latest trade developments, President Trump threatened 100% tariffs on Canada if it "makes deal with China". Follows PM Carney's recent visit to China, where he and Xi agreed to tariff concessions on China EVs and Canada agricultural products. Market mostly ignoring Trump's latest tariff threat, reflecting usual skepticism he will follow through. Meanwhile, Reuters sources said India to reduce tariffs on Europe auto imports to 40% from as much as 110%, as part of free trade deal that could be announced as soon as Tuesday.
