Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong and another negative start in Japan. Australia higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes ended mostly higher on Monday. Australian bond yields up 1-2 bp after resuming trade following Monday's public holiday. Korean won strengthening following Trump tariff threat, dollar steady elsewhere after falling to four-month low. Gold retreating further from earlier highs while silver and palladium experiencing steeper pullbacks. Crude little changed. Bitcoin stabilizing near one-week low.
Dollar index down to four-month low following reports late last week NY Fed conducted rate check, which raised speculation of joint US-Japan action to prop up yen after currency neared lowest since mid-2024 . Market fallout extended to commodities with silver up 14% at one stage Monday before erasing most of its gains late in US trading. Gold also faded after breaking through $5K for first time. Intervention chatter also provided reprieve for bond markets with Treasury and JGB curves flattening.
Market processing volley of trade headlines after President Trump threatened to hike tariffs on South Korea to 25% from 15%, blaming Korea's legislature for enacting trade deal struck year. Trump's latest tariff threat being viewed with usual skepticism he will follow through after his canceling of tariffs on EU over Greenland revived TACO trade. Similar to Canada tariff threat, Trump gave no timeframe for when South Korea tariff hike will go into effect and White House has so far not issued formal order adjusting duties.
