StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.97%), Hang Seng Futures +0.50%, ASX SPI 200 +0.22%, S&P Futures +0.05%

Jan 27 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gain in Hong Kong and negative start in Japan. Australia higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds weakening ahead of CPI data, coming after Treasury curve bear steepened overnight. Dollar weakness the big story in FX markets after Trump described its decline as great. Corresponding with big gains in metals with crude up to four-month high. Bitcoin flat.

    • FX market volatility continues to play out with dollar extending selloff to four-year low after President Trump said he wasn't concerned with its decline and criticized nations like China and Japan for consistently devaluing their currencies. Initial interpretation is that Trump's remarks suggest administration favors weaker dollar to support exports. Remarks accentuated bearish sentiment towards the greenback driven by combination of erratic trade policy, geopolitical tensions (Greenland/NATO), Fed independence concerns and pickup in yen intervention chatter.

    • Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, President Trump said will "work something out with South Korea", a day after he threatened to raise tariffs because its parliament had not yet enacted trade deal struck last year. Responding to tariff threat, South Korea's ruling Democratic Party said it would look to hold vote on investment bill next month. Markets have mostly ignored tariff threat and ensuing discussions about true motivations behind it, underlining long-held skepticism Trump will follow-through.

    • Australian Q4 CPI the headline event on economic calendar with next month's RBA decision likely to hinge on outcome. Most of the focus will be RBA's preferred trimmed mean inflation, where print of 0.8% q/q or higher is viewed as potential trigger for rate hike. Odds of a February rate hike have firmed to 60% following hot jobs and household spending data. Australian bonds have been under pressure ahead of the data with policy-sensitive 3Y yield rising to a two-year high.
