Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Hong Kong and flat start in Japan. ASX lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures gaining afterhours following another tech-led retreat in Wednesday trade. Australian bonds little changed after Treasury curve steepened overnight. FX markets steady after dollar near two-week high against yen. Crude pulling back following reports US-Iran talks back on. Gold and silver extending bounce from Monday lows. Bitcoin fell back to Nov-2024 lows.
Focus remained on SaaS selloff with sector improving off session lows overnight (IGV touched lowest since Apr-2024, extending year-to-date decline to 21%). Most of the focus has been on Anthropic's recent release of specialized plugins for Claude Cowork, which fueled existing concerns about disruption to software industry from AI. However, Nvidia and Arm CEOs dismissed fears about AI cannibalizing software companies. Semi weakness was more pronounced with ~AMD~ experiencing worst single day drop since 2017 (SOX fell 4.4%).
More tech companies reporting afterhours. Alphabet (~GOOGL~) (-1%) guided revenue above forecasts and flagged massive increase in capex to help fund compute capacity for Google DeepMind. Qualcomm (~QCOM~) (-10%) revenue guidance fell short of expectations with memory chip shortage to impact smartphone supply. Arm Holdings (~ARM~) (-9%) revenue outlook topped forecasts but faced bar high, while licensing revenues missed. In other tech news, SiTime (~SITM~) to acquire Renesas' (~6723.JP~) timing business.
