StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.17%), Hang Seng Futures (1.31%), ASX SPI 200 (1.57%), S&P Futures (0.67%)

Feb 05 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Hong Kong as ASX sells off in initial trade. Nikkei futures pointing to muted start. S&P 500 futures weaker afterhours amid AMZN's post-earnings drop. Australian bonds firming, taking cues from big bull steepening move in Treasuries following weak jobs data. Crude extending declines ahead of US-Iran meeting. Precious metals in freefall with silver erasing year-to-date gain. FX markets steady with dollar index on track for weekly gain. Bitcoin stabilizing after crashing to Oct-2024 low.

    • Software space sold off sharply again on Thursday with spotlight on financial data firms after Anthropic touted latest Claude model that can tackle complex financial research. Hyperscalers also under scrutiny with Amazon (AMZN) down 11% afterhours following underwhelming profit guidance that was accompanied by plans for big increase in capex. Meanwhile, concerns about US economy picked up following very weak JOLTS job openings and surge in Challenger layoffs.

    • Appearing before House committee RBA Governor Bullock outlined reasons for Tuesday's date hike while refraining from forward guidance, noting only RBA will monitor degree of temporary vs permanent drivers of inflation, and extent of capacity constraints. Later this afternoon RBI expected to keep repo rate unchanged and maintain neutral policy stance. Easing expectations faded after Governor Malhotra said economy in 'Goldilocks phase.' Other areas of interest include whether RBI will provide more liquidity support and buy dollars to replenish FX reserves.

    • Ahead of Sunday's snap election, latest Nikkei poll shows Japan's ruling coalition poised to win comfortable majority of seats in lower house, strengthening PM Takaichi's mandate. JGB yield curve has steepened sharply in runup to election while yen has faced renewed selling over past week amid concerns about fiscal pressures from more expansionary policy. Separately, President Trump endorsed Takaichi and said she would visit White House next month.
