Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling strong opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures advancing. Australian bonds weakening, taking cues from Friday's Treasury yield backup. Yen declining in aftermath of Japan election, dollar steady elsewhere after logging weekly gain. Crude pulling back with US-Iran talks to continue this week. Silver extending Friday's bounce while gold little changed. Bitcoin steady following Friday's 11% rally.
Sunday's snap election in Japan saw LDP win supermajority in lower house, strengthening PM Takaichi's mandate and allowing party to overturn any bills voted down in upper house. Discussion already turning to likely impact on Takaichi trades, particularly yen and JGBs. Government seeking to provide reassurance with Finance Minister Katayama reiterating vow to act decisively against rapid movements. Takaichi said would accelerate talks on sales tax cut while maintaining fiscal sustainability.
Positive leads for Asia from Friday's tech-led rally and accompanying talk about very oversold conditions (particularly in software space) and related pushback against some of the more dire AI disruption fears. Across Asia, Takaichi's decisive election win has set tone for big opening rally in Japan though also potential for weakness in yen and JGBs. Crypto and metals volatility another talking point after gold, silver and Bitcoin staged big Friday rebounds (though Bitcoin capped worst week since 2022).
Fairly light week in terms of Asia data, which feature China inflation (Wed), credit (unscheduled), Japan wages (Mon), Australia household spending (Mon), Taiwan exports (Mon) and GDP (Fri), New Zealand inflation expectations (Fri), and India CPI (Thurs). This week's highlights also include US nonfarm payrolls (Thurs) and CPI (Fri). Earnings season continues with remaining automakers and SoftBank among Japanese companies reporting. ASX reporting season also gets underway with CBA headlining bank earnings.
