StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +2.02%, Hang Seng Futures +0.59%, ASX SPI 200 +0.32%, S&P Futures (0.02%)

Feb 09 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open higher Tuesday. Futures in Japan rose sharply on top of yesterday's rally, followed by moderate advances in Hong Kong, Australia and South Korea. Japan ADRs were skewed positive while Golden Dragon China index rose a mild 0.11%. US futures steady following extended gains in the cash session. Tech leads were positive with SOX index up 1.42% and US big tech leaning to gains, particularly Mag 7. Treasuries were little changed to a touch firmer, reversing earlier weakness. Dollar index down 0.8%, more than erasing last week's gain. Gold finished up 2.0%, back above $5K. Silver ended up 6.9%, back above $80. Bitcoin futures up 0.8%, off earlier weakness. WTI crude settled up 1.3%.

    • Tech was the key theme amid some positive developments surrounding OpenAI ecosystem (Altman reportedly told employees ChatGPT back to 10%+ monthly growth, DA Davidson upgrade). Software sector gauges rebounded from Friday's selloff though remains down substantially in Q1. Positive spin for AI spending from Alphabet's (GOOGL) $20B multinational dollar bond offering. Sentiment remains upbeat on broader underlying corporate fundamentals. Dollar pushed notably lower on the back of reports Chinese authorities told banks to dial back their exposure to US Treasuries. Attention turning to Wednesday's delayed release of the official payrolls data which will bring Fed policy back to the fore, though results generally not expected to be impactful. CPI also due Friday.

    • Regional attention remains largely on politics as markets digest strong election results in Japan and Thailand that sparked equity rallies in both markets. PM Takaichi aiming to compile a consumption tax framework before summer, though broader growth strategy provided more of the substance behind Takaichi trades. With US President Trump reportedly set to visit China in early April, Beijing's cool response to Takaichi's victory attests to a continuation of bilateral challenges ahead. Another percolating theme appears to be Trump's growing frustration with Japan over delays in fulfilling US investment commitments, despite having publicly declared total endorsement for Takaichi. Similar impatience toward South Korea compelled Trump to announce tariff hikes in late January. SK parliament voted on Monday to launch a committee to speed up the process. Foreign Minister Cho was told by USTR Greer that 25% reciprocal tariff would be reinstated if South Korea makes no progress on addressing non-tariff barriers.
