  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mixed. Banks, personal goods and retail were the worst performing sectors, while technology, industrials and health care outperformed. Follows mixed performance on Thursday.

    • Euro appreciation increasingly becoming a focal point for ECB policy debate, with Governing Council member Kazaks warning it will take time to see full impact. Reuters cited latest forecast, which showed an improvement in earnings expectations with European companies expected to report a 1.1% in Q4 2025. While this would still be the worst in past seven quarters, it represents an increase on the 3.1% drop forecast a week ago. Elsewhere, BoE chief economist Pill hardening view on inflation backdrop (Bloomberg). Highlighted that rates are a "little too low" to bring inflation down and should be held at 3.75%. While inflation is forecast to hit the BoE's target in Q2 due to government cost-of-living measures, Pill pointed out that without one-off effect inflation would be ~2.5% - a sign that underlying price pressures remain persistent. In latest trade developments, attention on report Trump planning to scale back some levies on steel and aluminum as part of its broader affordability push.

    • On the macro data front, Eurozone second estimate of Q4 GDP confirmed at 0.3%, trade surplus widened in December. German wholesale prices jumped in January, but not a market mover. Spanish final inflation slightly lower than flash though unlikely to change Eurozone outlook and ECB rate narrative. Swiss CPI steady in January.

    • The Munich Security Conf takes place over the weekend until Sun. Chancellor Merz opening speech and then available for questions, other participants include Norway's PM Støre, EU's von der Leyen, Jørgensen, Kallas and Hansen. US's Rubio to meet Zelenskyy in Munich as more Russian strikes leave thousands without power, with the Ukrainian leader ruling out referendum on 'bad deal'.

    • In corporate news flow today, out of France, Safran (SAF.FP), L'Oreal (OR.FP), Ubisoft Entertainment (UBI.FP), Capgemini (CAP.FP) reported FY numbers. In the Nordics, Tomra Systems (TOM.NO), Norsk Hydro (NHY.NO), Fingerprint Cards (FING.B.SS), Apetit (APETIT.FH), Koskisen (KOSKI.FH), Norwegian Air Shuttle (NAS.NO) posted latest Q4/FY results. In the UK, NatWest Group (NWG.LN) reported FY earnings. Reuters reports Comcast's (CMCSA), ITV (ITV.LN) tie-up talks have slowed amid macro concerns and challenges related to a Studios spin. In the afternoon, Interpump Group (IP.IM) closed (22.2% lower after the company reported Q4 earnings with net income €37.4M vs FactSet €50.3M.
