Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan. Australia higher in initial trade. Greater China and other Asian markets closed for LNY. S&P 500 futures steady afterhours. New Zealand bonds firming ahead of RBNZ. Australian yields up 1-2 bp, tracking overnight Treasury weakness. Dollar index edged higher. Gold and silver stabilizing following earlier selloff. Crude unchanged after settling lower amid tamping down of US-Iran tensions. Bitcoin flat after retreating further from $70K.
Markets grappled with renewed turbulence AI space and precious metals. Software selloff resumed with IGV falling 2% amid persistent AI disruption fears (though there was nothing new on this front overnight). Broader tech space fared better with SOX flat and Mag 7 names mixed. Gold and silver plunged with losses thought to have been magnified by thin volumes with China and other Asian markets closed for LNY. Dollar strength also blamed for weakness in precious metals.
RBNZ expected to keep official cash rate (OCR) unchanged at 2.25%. While New Zealand's economy is showing signs of recovery, statement and Governor Breman expected to maintain cautious tone in emphasizing decisions to be guided by incoming data. OCR projections will get usual attention, including extent to which new forecasts converge to market expectations for 1-2 rate hikes by end-2026. Some thought new projections will bring forward first rate hike to earlier next year or later in 2026.
Also making headlines, President Trump touted first investment projects under US-Japan trade deal worth $36B covering oil, gas and critical mineral projects. Includes gas plant to supply SoftBank (9984.JP) AI data centers. India AI summit continued with government aiming to secure $200B of investments over next two years. In US tech news, META to expand partnership with NVDA involving deployment of millions of Blackwell and Rubin GPUs.
