Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Japan and rebound in Hong Kong. Australia marginally lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures down slightly afterhours. Bonds under pressure after Treasury yields spiked alongside oil prices. FX markets steady after dollar index rose to late January highs. Crude coming off highs while gold and silver logging mild gain. Bitcoin unchanged after nearing $70K.
US-Iran conflict remains big talking point after Trump gave 4-5 week war timeline (or longer). Key question surrounds potential for enduring energy disruptions with Strait of Hormuz flows having dwindled and facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar impacted. Crude reached highest since June amid the developments with gas futures also surging. Some concern sustained conflict will keep prices on upward trajectory with related inflation concerns attributed for Monday's backup in Treasury yields (market pushed back expected Fed rate cut to September).
On economic front, speculation that RBA could implement back-to-back rate hikes were fanned by remarks from Governor Bullock that March meeting is 'live' and board will actively debate whether it needs to act quicker with inflation at 3.8%. Japan capex data will feed into final Q1 GDP after preliminary figures showed only marginal growth in private investment. BOJ Governor Ueda slated to remark later this afternoon after Deputy Governor Himino on Monday backed gradually shifting to more neutral policy stance through moderate rate hikes.
