Mar 04 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening rallies in Japan and Hong Kong Australia also higher in initial trade. S&P 500 futures steady afterhours. Australian bond yields reversing higher after Treasury curve bear flattened overnight. FX markets steady after dollar index snapped run of gains. Crude strengthening following flat Wednesday session. Gold and silver seeing mild gains. Bitcoin coming off a little after rallying to one-month high.

    • Some semblance of stabilization overnight amid a still-unsettled geopolitical backdrop. Markets remain attuned to disruption headlines with articles discussing stagflationary risks for global economy. Latest Middle East reports highlighted Iranian outreach for talks (later denied) while shifting war aims/timelines remain a source of uncertainty for markets with US floating conflict stretching to eight weeks. Iranian attacks on Middle East energy facilities and Hormuz traffic slowdown continue to fan energy supply concerns with Reuters noting Qatar won't return to normal LNG production for at least a month.

    • China National People's Congress begins today with government work report expected to spell out GDP growth target of 4.5-5.0% (vs ~5% in previous years). Previews noted more proactive fiscal policy stance to entail stepped up issuance of ultra-long special bonds to facilitate investment and extension of consumer goods trade-in program. 'Moderately loose monetary policy' stance continues to support expectations of additional rate or RRR cuts. Government seen elevating importance of consumption as part of five-year plan (speculation they could introduce formal target) while tech advancement and self-sufficiency remain top priority.

    • Trade back in headlines after Treasury Secretary Bessent said 15% global tariff will likely be implemented sometime this week and that by August US expects to restore effective tariff rate to level before SCOTUS struck down IEEPA duties. US currently has 10% global tariff. Press sources have noted Bessent set to meet China Vice Premier He Lifeng in Paris this week for trade talks involving airplane, soybean purchases and fentanyl tariffs (which were invalidated by SCOTUS decision).
