Mar 05 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Friday trade as Iran conflict continues to drive sentiment. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. Australia lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian yield curve bear flattening, tracking latest Treasury rate backup. FX markets steady after dollar index retreated from Nov-2025 highs. Crude extending pullback from highs with WTI back below $80. Gold and silver nudging up from earlier lows. Bitcoin flat after pulling back towards $70K.

    • Surging oil prices driving risk-off after crude logged biggest daily rally since May-2020, corresponding with another backup in bond yields and further erosion of Fed rate cut expectations. Crude rally having hawkish implications for BOJ policy outlook after Bloomberg sources said central bank paying close attention to upside inflation risks as they weigh April rate hike. Asia's heavy reliance on Middle East also leave it vulnerable to downside risks to growth, hitting sentiment towards region's currencies with EM Asia among the biggest decliners.

    • Middle East conflict continues with no clarity on timeline for ending war, no negotiations underway and Strait of Hormuz closure fanning concerns about energy supply. Fears prolonged closure will lead to more production shut-ins as storage capacity is reached. Asia particularly vulnerable with Bloomberg sources noting Saudi Aramco raised price of crude for Asia buyers by most since Aug-2022. Asian countries taking mitigation measures amid risk to supplies of gas and crude and Reuters sources said China in talks with Iran to allow vessels safe passage.

    • In other developments, South Korea CPI inflation unchanged in February while core measure that excludes food and energy firmed. Chip stocks a focus after Bloomberg sources said Trump administration considering regulations to restrict AI chip shipments without US approval, impacting NVDA and AMD. In other company news, JD.com (9618.HK) ADRs ended little changed after revenue came in-line. Kioxia (285A.JP) to added to Nikkei 225 from April following latest index reshuffle.
