Synopsis:
Asian markets tracking for positive start to Tuesday trade. Japan, Australia and Hong Kong futures all traded higher alongside rebound in US equities amid hopes for an end to Iran war. S&P 500 futures down slightly afterhours following tech-led gain on Monday. Big reversal in Australian bond yields tracking overnight Treasury rally. FX markets steady after dollar index fell back towards one-week low. WTI and Brent selloff continues (both back below $90). Gold and silver strengthening. Bitcoin drifting up from one-week low.
Oil market volatile with crude extending selloff in post-settlement trade. Selloff linked to suggestions conflict could end soon after Trump said "war very complete", flagged US navy escorts when time comes, temporary oil sanctions relief, and mused about US takeover of Strait Hormuz. Speculation of joint G7 reserves release also helped Situation remains highly uncertain amid shifting war timelines (Trump later said US going to go further), continued Hormuz shipping disruption and growing number of production shut-ins in Gulf countries.
China will release first trade data for the year, combined Jan-Feb figure that comes after export growth maintained solid momentum in December. According to Reuters consensus, export growth forecast to risen to 7.1% y/y from December's 6.6% while imports seen climbing 6.3% from December's 5.7%. Comes after official PMI showed manufacturing stuck in contraction over January and February 2026 with new export order declines quickening, partially reflecting economic weakness and seasonal slowdown/LNY distortion.
In other economic developments, Japan final Q4 GDP to account for stronger-than-expected capex figures that signaled an upward revision to private investment. Japan household spending unexpectedly contracted in January. South Korea final Q4 GDP showed economy shrunk at slightly narrower pace than preliminary read, confirming first contraction since Q1 2025. Australia consumer confidence lifted slightly from February's weak read.
