  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Thursday trade. Futures pointing to opening losses in Japan and Hong Kong. Steep initial declines in Australia. . S&P 500 futures extending losses afterhours. Australian bonds under pressure, tracking Treasury yield backup with crude rebounding. Dollar saw broad gains, nearing highest against yen since late January. Oil strengthening in post-settlement trade with WTI and Brent back above $90. Gold and silver steady. Bitcoin continues to fluctuate around $70K.

    • Oil rebound seemed to put a dent in risk sentiment overnight after IEA confirmed plans for coordinated release of 400M barrels of strategic oil reserves but left open questions about individual member contributions and timeline. President Trump confirmed plans for SPR release with vow to refill later. Japan PM Takaichi said preparing to release 15 day of private reserves and month worth of state reserves. Market concern still largely on Strait of Hormuz disruptions with Iran issuing more threats to block flows and fire on ships.

    • Mixed messaging from White House on war's timeline and aims not helping after President Trump said war could send soon with US running out of targets while at a later rally vowed to continue until job is finished. Israeli military officials also said they expect at least two more weeks of operations. Meanwhile, Iran said any ceasefire contingent on guarantee of no future strikes, payment of reparations and recognition of Tehran's legitimate rights, conditions considered unacceptable to US.

    • Market expectations surrounding central bank policy tilting hawkish as Iran war drags on and elevated crude prices fan inflation concerns. US core inflation moderated before Iran conflict as Fed rate cut path continues to flatten with futures pricing ~30 bp of cuts through year-end, a fresh YTD low. More economists expect BOJ to hike in April according to latest Bloomberg survey. Market pricing in strong probability of March RBA rate hike following hawkish inflation remarks by top officials. Hawkish ECB and BOE repricing continues.
