  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling negative start in Japan with Australia also opening lower. Hang Seng tracking for initial gains. S&P 500 futures up slightly following negative finish to last week. Bonds mixed with Australian yield curve steepening. Treasuries mixed Friday with yields also higher at the long end. FX markets steady after dollar index near highest since May-2025, and highest against yen since mid-2024. Crude pushing higher amid Kharg Island focus. Silver and gold extending recent declines. Bitcoin little changed.

    • Iran conflict enters third week with concerns still largely on energy supply disruptions, keeping crude above $100. US bombed Iran's Kharg Island, and while oil facilities spared markets sensitive to potential for disruptions from Iran's main oil export terminal, which predominantly ships to China. Strait of Hormuz situation fluid with shipping at a standstill and US looking to coordinate with other countries about resuming flows. Prospect of a negotiated end uncertain after Trump said Iran negotiating but terms not to his liking. US and Israel also see war extending few more weeks.

    • Big week on calendar headlined by central bank meetings. Fed, BOE, BOJ and ECB all expected to remain onholdwithfocus instead on commentary surrounding growth and inflation implications from Middle East conflict. RBA (Tues)rate hike mostly priced in with inflation well above target. China activity data expected to show soft start to 2026. Japan trade data (Wed) may be subject to negative payback for January. Australia employment (Thu) data seen reinforcing tight labor market narrative. New Zealand Q4 GDP growth (Thu) anticipated to slow as economists eye rebound in 2026.

    • In other developments, Treasury Secretary Bessent met China Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday for talks to help pave way for Trump-Xi summit later this month. No details provided with discussions expected to involve tariffs, rare earths and soybeans. Reuters sources said China open to increasing purchases of agricultural goods. Talks continue Monday

    • In company-related news, Sources told the Information ByteDance suspended global launch of Seedance 2.0 after Hollywood studios pushed back. Bloomberg sources said China's Moonshot AI seeing up to $1B in funding round, valuing company at around $18B. Lynas (LYC.AU) signed rare earths supply deal with Pentagon. Japan to double planned investment in science and tech over next five years.
