  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mostly higher in volatile trade. DAX underperforms. Follows Monday's firmer close. Energy, telcos and chemicals top gainers; banks, retail and industrials the big laggards.

    • Middle East tensions remain high despite Donald Trump suggesting progress with Iran, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz, denied by Iranian media. US envoy Steve Witkoff is reportedly heading to Pakistan for talks, though Tehran's representation is unclear. Fighting continues, with US-Israeli strikes and Iranian retaliation, as Gulf states weigh joining the conflict.

    • On European macro front, flash PMIs provide first-look at impact on activity from Iran conflict. Eurozone composite PMI weakens as expected; manufacturing ahead of forecast, but services sector underperforms. UK composite PMI down sharply on services sector weakness. UK Chancellor Reeves said Treasury making contingency plans for household support if energy bills remain elevated. Will update on fuel pricing within the next month. Reiterated commitment to fiscal rules. Elsewhere, several economists believe market overestimating likely peak of UK interest rates. EU agreed trade deal and security pact with Australia.

    • In corporate news flow this morning, in the UK, Kingfisher (KGF.LN) reported in-line FY numbers, with Bellway (BWY.LN) and Fevertree Drinks (FEVR.LN) also reporting. Out of DACHs, Dräger (DRW3.GR) and Inficon Holding (IFCN.SW) updated investors, whilst activist Jeff Ubben is reportedly seeking to sell stake in Bayer (BAYN.GR). Elsewhere, SK Hynix (000660.KS) is to purchase KRW11.950T (€6.91B) worth of EUV scanners from ASML (ASML.NA).

    • In M&A, Puig (PUIG.SM) confirms that it is holding discussions regarding a possible business combination with The Estée Lauder (EL); no definitive decision has been made nor has any agreement been reached. Apollo (APO) and Bain reportedly among private equity firms bidding on Continental AG's (CON.GR) industrial unit Contitech.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, key releases will include, amongst others, Germany Mar IFO business climate, UK Feb CPI, PRI, PPI output/input, Spain Feb PPI, Switzerland Mar expectations - ZEW. Of note, markets will be closed in Greece (National Day) and Cyprus (Independence Day).
