Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. Mild initial losses in Australia. S&P 500 futures weakening afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening following overnight Treasury rally. Dollar steady against majors with yen unable to sustain advance that followed Monday's more forceful intervention comments. Crude extending rally amid heightened market sensitivity to Middle East disruption headlines. Gold and silver reversing lower. Bitcoin little changed.
Lot of uncertainty surrounding Iran conflict with White House emphasizing positive talks (Trump said US in serious negotiations with great progress made). At same time Trump threatened to bomb Iranian energy, oil and desalination facilities, heightening concerns about Middle East economic infrastructure being targeted and risking further supply chain disruptions. Crude continues to push higher with Iran moving to tighten control over Strait of Hormuz, inviting more US warnings about consequences. Wires also picking up report about Iranian strike against Middle East oil tanker.
Busier day on economic calendar. China official PMI forecast to show recovery in manufacturing and non-manufacturing activity following recent stretch in contraction. Sub-gauges will be scrutinized for extent of Iran war impact. RBA meeting minutes will detail board's inflation risk assessments amid March rate hike. Tokyo CPI data showed core inflation easing further below 2% target amid energy subsidies. Japan unemployment rate unexpectedly ticked down. Japan industrial production and retail sales due out later this morning.
