Apr 08 ,2026

  • Synopsis

    • European equity markets are set for a sharply higher open after US-Iran ceasefire was agreed within a couple of hours of Trump's deadline. Asia equities ranging from sharp gains to big rallies Wednesday with South Korea up around 6%, Japan Nikkei up 5%, alongside strong gains in Hong Kong, mainland China and Australia. Similar strength in US futures, extending a late bounce in the cash session when last-ditch ceasefire efforts emerged. Crude oil futures tumbling 15% on ceasefire headlines. Gold and Bitcoin up sharply.

    • Big risk-on trade amid major relief after Trump agreed to suspend bombing operations in Iran for two weeks conditional on reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with confirmation of a ceasefire from Iran. First round of negotiations reportedly set for Friday in Islamabad. Trump said Iran's 10-point proposal was a workable basis for negotiation after previously indicating it wasn't good enough. Iran Supreme National Security Council was quoted as claiming major concessions -- US agreed in principle to lift all primary and secondary sanctions, while also accepting Iran's nuclear enrichment and continued control over the Strait.

    • Investors digest macro implications for US-Iran ceasefire. While markets repricing central bank outlook and inflation expectations, resumption of shipping through the Strait will not be a simple process. EIA warned full restoration of Strait oil flows will take months, keeping fuel prices elevated in the meantime. Stagflation risk still prevalent with energy prices sharply higher compared with pre-conflict levels, though policymakers may feel more comfortable looking through energy shock if ceasefire leads to full peace agreement. IMF revised its outlook and warned of depleted policy space to deal with major economic downturn.

    • In central banks, Norges Bank's Bache and Børsum lecture at 9:30CET at Bank's regional network (Region Nord), topics are prospects for the Norwegian economy and the Government Pension Fund Global, and Longva speech at 11:00CET at Bank's regional network (Region Sør-Vest) topic is prospects for the Norwegian economy.

    • On the political front, Norway's minister of energy Aasland receives report from Nuclear Power Committee at 9:00CET which addresses nuclear power as a possible energy source in Norway.

    • Macro data due include Germany Feb factory orders, Mar construction PMI, France Feb trade balance, Switzerland Mar unemployment rate, UK Mar construction PMI, house price index - Halifax, Eurozone Feb retail sales, PPI. UK equity flow data via Calastone showed Iran war fueled a big selloff in UK equity funds in November.
