Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong, and flat start in Australia. S&P 500 futures down slightly after index notched fourth straight weekly gain. Treasuries were mostly firmer Friday with curve bull steepening, though yields ended higher over the week. Crude rallying following latest US-Iran diplomatic setback. Gold and silver in retreat. FX markets steady after dollar inched up to two-week high against yen. Bitcoin edging back to early February highs.
US-Iran negotiations in state of flux after President Trump cancelled planned visit by Witfkoff and Kushner to Pakistan to meet with Iranian delegation. After cancellation Trump said Iran improved its offer but still not good enough. Key sticking points remain nuclear issue and Iranian insistence on controlling Strait of Hormuz, while Iran refusing to negotiate under continued US blockade. While ceasefire holding up and two sides expected to resume talks, prolonged disruption to Hormuz flows fanning more talk about market complacency and forced demand loss triggered by physical shortages.
Central banks headline economic week. Fed (Wed), BOE (Thurs), ECB (Thurs) and BOJ (Tues) all expected to leave interest rates unchanged with focus mainly on their assessment of policy implications from Middle East conflict. Australia Q1 CPI (Wed) shapes as key input into RBA's May decision. China PMIs (Thurs) will be scrutinized for war impacts on factory activity and input costs. Tokyo CPI (Fri) to reveal extent to which surge in oil influenced inflation. Japan industrial production and retail sales (Fri), and South Korea industrial production (Thurs) also due. Asia earnings season ramps up with major Japan and Chinese companies reporting.
