Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Australia, and small initial gain in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours following tech-led retreat on Tuesday. Australian bonds weakening ahead of Q1 CPI. Treasuries mostly weaker Tuesday with curve flattening. FX markets steady after dollar index rose marginally. Crude fluctuating with WTI hovering near $100. Gold and silver flat following overnight decline. Bitcoin back to one-week low.
Negative leads for Asian tech after SOX ended down 3.6% following media report OpenAI missed own targets for new users and revenue. Development renewed concerns about massive capex plans for data centers. OpenAI-linked names sold off with SoftBank (9984.JP) ending down 10% on Tuesday. Report cast somewhat of a shadow ahead of Mag 7 earnings, which kick off after US market close on Wednesday). AI demand trends and capex updates will be key themes, particularly as they shape market views on ROI and AI monetization.
Fed expected to leave interest rates unchanged Wednesday. Middle East conflict looms over meeting with upside inflation risks and downside risks to growth supporting wait-and-see stance. Meeting also occurs against resilient US macro backdrop, including improving labor market trends and consumer spending. Some previews expect changes to policy statement to reflect inflationary pressures and stronger jobs data. Chair Powell seen avoiding any signaling, reiterating policy well positioned to address labor market and inflation.
Also on the economic calendar, Australia Q1 headline inflation seen rising to 4.8% y/y, quickest pace since Q3-2023. An inflation jump likely to strengthen expectations of an RBA rate hike next week (market pricing in roughly 80% chance of May rate hike), particularly given Australian economy was already running hot ahead of Iran conflict and secondary effect of oil spike seen playing out over Q2.
