StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.37%, Hang Seng Futures +1.46%, ASX SPI 200 +1.47%, S&P Futures +0.17%

Apr 30 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade. Australia tracking for opening rally with Nikkei and Hang Seng futures also ending higher overnight. Several Asia markets, including Japan, China and South Korea closed for Labor Day/Golden Week holiday. S&P 500 futures steady after US indexes hit fresh record highs Thursday. Australian bonds rebounding after Treasury yields reversed lower with curve steepening. FX markets steady after dollar index logged biggest fall in over year amid yen rally. Crude lifting in post-settlement trade while gold and silver adding to gains. Bitcoin little changed.

    • Yen strength the big story in FX markets with Japan's government and BOJ said to have intervened for first time since mid-2024 after currency breached 160-dollar handle. Intervention follows stepped up verbal warnings over the past week ahead Golden Week holiday period. Latest yen weakness attributed to lack of policy signaling from Governor Ueda at his post-meeting press conference and spike in crude oil that drove dollar and yields higher. Intervention drove yen to two-month high against dollar.

    • Sentiment helped by pullback oil and rates following recent upward pressure attributed to lack of traction in US-Iran negotiations, and continued Strait of Hormuz closure fanning concerns about physical market shortages. Nothing incremental from latest headlines with Trump reportedly to receive briefing on plans for new military strikes while Iran reasserted its right over Strait of Hormuz. Reports about US push for an international coalition to reopen Strait didn't appear to gain much traction with countries hinging any involvement on cessation of hostilities.

    • Asia's AAPL suppliers in focus after company gave revenue guidance that came in well ahead of consensus, sending stock up 3% afterhours. iPhone revenue in-line/weaker though demand strong with sales impacted by supply constraints. Impact of memory tightness described as minimal, though larger hit expected in March quarter. Regional breakdown showed China revenue up stronger-than-expected 28% y/y. Group also raised dividend and authorized additional $100B buyback.
