Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 5000 futures steady following a quiet Monday session where semis extended their recent rally (SOX up 2.6%). Australian bonds weakening after Treasury yields rose alongside oil. Crude maintaining gains with gold and silver strengthening. FX markets steady after dollar strengthened against Asian currencies.
Latest setback in US-Iran negotiations leaves path forward uncertain after President Trump said ceasefire is on life support. Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal underlined still-large gaps between two sides with Tehran refusing to meaningfully cede on nuclear issue and asserting its right over Strait of Hormuz. Market still seems skeptical about full resumption of war though Trump indicated he may revive an expanded naval mission in Strait of Hormuz. However, it remains unclear whether this will alter the status quo.
No shortage of Trump-Xi preview articles ahead of Trump's visit on 13-May. Chinese promises to purchase more US agricultural and products, and Boeing aircraft seen as most tangible outcome of trade talks. Trump reportedly set to prod Xi to curb support for Iran and help broker agreement that ends conflict. However, there is skepticism China will harden its stance against Iran. Taiwan on agenda though US officials don't anticipate Trump to acquiesce to China's request to toughen language on independence.
