May 13 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling small opening gain in Japan. Hong Kong set for opening rally after Nasdaq Golden Dragon index rallied 4% amid post-earnings rallies in Tencent and Alibaba. Australia set for small initial decline. Nasdaq futures higher afterhours with CSCO up 20% following earnings. Australian bond yields down 1 bp after Treasures ended narrowly mixed overnight. Crude unchanged following choppy offshore session. Gold flat while silver pulling back from earlier highs. FX markets steady after dollar index ended slightly higher. Bitcoin back below $80K.

    • President Trump in Beijing for summit with President Xi. Reuters sources noted two sides weighing framework where tariffs are reduced on some $30B of non-strategic goods. Other reports noted two sides will extend last year's trade truce with US to seek Chinese purchase commitments for agricultural and energy products. US likely to maintain restrictions on sensitive technology though participation of NVDA CEO Jensen Huang signals H200 chips could be discussed. Taiwan on agenda with Trump to discuss US arms sales though US officials say no change to stance on independence. Trump downplayed Iran as a focal point and there is skepticism about XI's willingness to meaningfully pressure Tehran.

    • Alibaba (9988.HK) ADRs up 8% in US after narrow top line miss was overshadowed by bullish outlook for cloud revenue growth and mix shift towards Model-as-a-Service. Cloud price hikes seen driving margin expansion with management talking up expected returns from investment (flagged upgrade to planned CNY380B AI capex over next three years). Tencent (700.HK) ADRs rose 6%. Top and bottom line missed with domestic gaming revenue light, though partially reflected LNY timing. Management flagged significant increase in capex as chip supply improves.
