May 18 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and mild initial decline in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures up slightly afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening with curve flattening following recent yield backup. Crude retreating after Trump paused planned Iran strikes. Gold and silver strengthening. Dollar steady after coming off earlier highs against yen. Bitcoin unchanged after dropping to early May low.

    • Rate stabilization aided sentiment overnight following Monday's yield backup during Asian session in wake of Japan PM Takaichi's calls for an extra budget. Recent bond market volatility attributed to variety of factors, including renewed concerns about fiscal trajectories (UK and Japan), tepid investor demand signaled in weak auctions, Iran war uncertainty pushing crude higher with associated upside risks to inflation, and hawkish-leaning remarks from central bank policymakers nudging markets to price in rate hikes.

    • Markets processing more Iran war headline volatility with crude selling off late after President Trump revealed he held off on planned military strikes against Iran on Tuesday, to allow time for talks on an agreement to end war. Trump said deal will include no nuclear weapons but there is high uncertainty whether two sides can bridge still-wide gaps in their demands. US unimpressed by Iran's latest proposal while Tehran signaling no movement from its red lines on nuclear and Strait of Hormuz. Trump said military prepared to strike in moment's notice if no deal reached.

    • Looking ahead, Japan GDP growth forecast to have quickened slightly from previous quarter with positive contributions expected form consumption, capex and exports. RBA minutes will be gauged for indications of board's policy stance after Governor Bullock said board now in position to be on alert to risks on both sides. RBA Assistant Governor Hunter also slated to remark in Bloomberg interview. Australian consumer sentiment survey expected to show confidence remaining at depressed levels this month..
