StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.52%), Hang Seng Futures (0.37%), ASX SPI 200 (0.45%), S&P Futures +0.13%

May 19 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling moderate opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 50 futures up slightly after US indexes ended down for third straight session. Australian yield curve steepening with yields up 1-2 bp, tracking overnight weakness in Treasuries. Crude little changed following latest US-Iran rhetorical back-and-forth. Gold and silver extending declines. FX markets steady with dollar little changed on major crosses. Korean won back to early April lows. Bitcoin stabilized near one-month low.

    • Risk-off tone on US markets as bond markets came under fresh pressure. Discussions continue to feature worries about fiscal trajectories (UK and Japan in particular) and higher term premium being baked into long-end yields, upside risks to inflation from elevated crude prices/Strait of Hormuz limbo, and hawkish shift in central bank policymaker rhetoric pushing markets to price in rate hikes. Yield backup also intertwined with recent unwinding of momentum trade with higher rate backdrop increasing scrutiny on valuations following recent run-up.

    • Light day on economic calendar. China expected to keep 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates unchanged. While April activity data showed loss of growth momentum, previews noted few incentives for PBOC to ease policy with liquidity ample, overnight rates near two-year lows and surge in raw material costs driving upswing in factory-gate inflation. Reuters Tankan showed Japan manufacturer sentiment improved slightly, though confidence among autos deteriorated. Firms more pessimistic about 3-month outlook. Non-manufacturer sentiment eased with firms also cautious about near-term outlook.
