  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Nikkei futures traded higher on Friday and ASX futures have erased earlier losses. Hong Kong and South Korea closed for public holidays. S&P 500 futures strengthening on progress towards US-Iran agreement. Australian yield curve bull flattening. Crude under pressure with WTI and Brent down 5%. Gold and silver rallying. Dollar weakening against some of the majors, steady against yen. Aussie, kiwi and Korean won all advancing. Bitcoin strengthening alongside equity futures.

    • Markets welcoming traction on US-Iran diplomacy after President Trump said agreement to end conflict largely negotiated. Two sides reported have reached MoU that will include 60-day ceasefire, opening of Strait of Hormuz, and oil sanctions relief. Nuclear issue would be punted to next round of talks though US officials said Iran gave verbal assurances on uranium stockpiles and enrichment. Iran yet to have formally approve agreement and some sticking points remain, including nuclear issue, Strait of Hormuz tolling and unfreezing of Iranian assets.

    • Central banks in focus this week with RBNZ (Wed) expected to leave OCR unchanged (focus likely to center on MPC guidance about potential rate hikes). BOK (Thurs) expected to leave rates unchanged with dot plot a focus and previews looking for signs of hawkish shift. BOJ Governor Ueda and other central bank policymakers speaking at BOJ conference. Australian April CPI (Wed) expected to show trimmed mean inflation elevated above target range. Tokyo core inflation (Fri) seen unchanged below 2% target. China industrial profits, Japan unemployment rate, retail sales and industrial production, South Korea industrial production also due out.
