Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling small opening gains in Japan and Australia. Hong Kong resumes trade after mainland China indexes ended higher Monday. S&P 500 futures remain higher after positive offshore session in Europe driven by expectations of a US-Iran agreement to end conflict (US markets were closed for Memorial Day holiday). Australian bonds unchanged. Crude nursing heave losses from Monday while gold and silver remain higher. Bitcoin mostly range-bound.
US-Iran headlines still leaning towards an agreement being struck with negotiations ongoing in Qatar. President Trump posted negotiations proceeding nicely and Pakistan's chief mediator said agreement close. Familiar obstacles line path towards deal and establishment of 60-day negotiating period. These include timeline for releasing frozen Iranian assets, control over Strait of Hormuz, Israeli objections against including Lebanon in deal, questions surrounding Iran's commitments regarding suspension uranium enrichment and fate of uranium stockpiles.
In other developments, Japan PM Takaichi on Monday said extra budget will be financed by deficit-covering bonds but other revenue sources expected to leave net JGB issuance unchanged. Hang Seng price action likely to draw interest after market was closed Monday for public holiday. Nasdaq Golden Dragon index fell 2% Friday with takeaways from China's crackdown on illicit cross-border trading noting potentially negative implications for Hong Kong and offshore-listed Chinese stocks.
