Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gain in Japan, and flat starts in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds flat while NZ yields moving higher ahead of RBNZ meeting. Crude backing off earlier highs while silver and gold up from overnight lows. FX markets steady after dollar index ended little changed. Bitcoin hovering near one-month low.
RBNZ expected to leave OCR unchanged at 2.25%. Focus will be on guiding commentary, including whether MPC adopts a more hawkish tone that sets up potential rate hike in coming months. Forecasts expected to show upward revisions to OCR projections amid upside inflation risks. Markets pricing in 125 of tightening over next 12 months and first occurring by September. BOJ Governor Ueda to provide opening remarks at BOJ conference. Australia April CPI expected to show trimmed mean inflation elevated above 3% target range.
Nothing particularly incremental on US-Iran diplomacy negotiations, which appear to be focused on release of frozen funds. Mooted MoU would reopen Strait of Hormuz though Iran insisting on fee collection and describing Monday skirmish involving US and Israeli jets as violation of ceasefire. Lebanon another sticking point with Israel vowing to continue operations against Hezbollah. Market's baseline expectation remains for deal to be reached though Secretary of State Rubio said may take few days to materialize.
