Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling small opening gain in Japan, flat start in Hong Kong and initial decline in Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds weakening, contrasting with mild decline in Treasury yields. Crude advancing in post-settlement trade. Gold and silver flat. FX markets steady after dollar crept higher against yen while falling to lowest against yuan since early 2023. Bitcoin down to mid-April lows.
Cautious commentary from President Trump regarding US-Iran negotiations. Trump optimistic about state of talks but didn't like Tehra's offer so far. Pushed back against Iranian demands over Strait of Hormuz, insisting nobody will control the waterway. Denied reports about US giving Iran sanctions relief or unfreezing assets. Also repeated his demands for Gulf states to join Abraham Accords, otherwise it could jeopardise US interest in signing agreement with Iran. Markets still mostly looked past the rhetoric with baseline assumption remaining for some agreement to be struck.
US semis/memory names lost some momentum overnight with SOX ending down 1.4%. Micron rose another 4% to fresh record but finished well below opening highs. Nothing specific behind the reversal, which follows recent massive run-up (SOX up 10% in past five sessions). South Korea's memory giants the standout gainers in Asia with SK Hynix up 16% wtd and reaching $1T milestone. China's pure play AI stocks and chip producers, and smaller Taiwan semis also experiencing strong weeks.
BOK expected to leave interest rates unchanged. Previews note potential for dot plot and vote count will portend hawkish shift amid rising inflation and a resilient economy supported by chip exports. Appearing before parliament, RBNZ Governor Breman said pace of rate hikes will depend on inflation-constraining effects of weaker demand. Australian household spending forecast to have shrunk in April amid pickup in cost pressures. Australian private capex growth forecast to have picked up in Q1. New Zealand budget to be released.
