  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended mostly higher, but off best levels. DAX softer. Autos, luxury, and food/beverage the best performers, while energy, utilities and defensives the big laggards. Follows mostly weaker performance on Tuesday.

    • Risk appetite remains supported by hopes of a US-Iran ceasefire, after Iranian state media reported a draft of an initial, unofficial MoU with the US, though White House has now dismissed the report as "not true" and "a complete fabrication". European equity markets near record highs, though some cautious analyst reports recently due to challenging earnings outlook.

    • More discussions on weakness in UK consumer demand after warnings from retailers and weak macro data. Meanwhile, former PM Blair criticized Starmer's government for lack of direction and talked up Wes Streeting, who is a leadership contender.

    • On a light EZ macro calendar, the French consumer confidence indicator fell to its lowest level since March 2023 at 82 in May versus consensus 83 and prior 84. Notable deterioration in expectations on finances, major purchase intentions and standard of living. Elsewhere, new-vehicle registrations in EU, Britain and EFTA countries climbed 7.0% to 1.2M units last month. Chinese brands extending momentum.

    • In corporate news, Capgemini (CAP.FP) hosts its CMD and released 2028 financial targets, including delivering 2025 to 2028 revenue CAGR at constant currency of +5.5-7.5%, with c. 2 points from M&A. Out of the DACHs region, Aroundtown (AT1.GR) reported Q1 earnings. In the Nordics, Telenor (TEL.NO) issued a CMD update announcing a streamlined organisational structure that removes the current Nordic Business Area layer. In the UK, Greencore Group (GNC.LN) and Pets At Home Group (PETS.LN) updated investors with their latest numbers. On the M&A newsflow, Akzo Nobel (AKZA.NA) has rejected a cash offer from Nippon Paint and Sherwin-Williams, while both AkzoNobel boards unanimously continue to recommend the merger of equals between AkzoNobel and Axalta.
