Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling small opening gain in Japan and muted start in Hong Kong. Mild opening decline expected in Australia. S&P 500 futures retreating afterhours. Australian yields up 1-2 bp after Treasuries weakened amid Monday's oil rally. Crude steady in post-settlement trade. Gold and silver stable following earlier weakness. FX markets steady after dollar rose to two-month high against yen. Bitcoin pullback continued, down to lowest since mid-April.
More headline noise surrounding US-Iran negotiations after Trump said talks continuing at a rapid pace. Crude surged on earlier reports Iran suspended talks and threatened to disrupt shipping in Red Sea in response to Israel's ground offensive in Lebanon. Lebanon later announced partial ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah following Trump's phone to PM Netanyahu. Trump gave conflicting opinions on talks, saying he believes deal could be reached over next week after earlier expressing disinterest in continuing slow negotiations.
On economic front, South Korea May inflation rose by more than expected with core gauge also increasing. Comes after BOK's hawkish hold last week that featured upgrade to inflation forecasts. China RatingDog services PMI forecast to show little change to pace of expansion. BOJ Governor Ueda to speak later this evening. Japan 10Y bond auction this afternoon following recent stabilization in yields. Final set of Australian GDP inputs due out, business inventories, government spending and net exports.
