Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening rebounds in Japan and South Korea following Monday's tech-led sell-off. Hang Seng futures ended flat while ASX futures were slightly higher. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds weaker after Treasury yields rose further on Monday. Crude flat after ending off highs following Israel-Iran détente. Gold and silver extending declines. FX markets steady with yen near 160 against dollar and Korean won recovering following government support pledge. Bitcoin rebounded after nearing Oct-2024 lows.
Markets welcomed Iran and Israel agreeing to cease strikes against each other following weekend tit-for-tat that sparked concerns about a resumption of war. US and Iran said strikes have not halted negotiations though developments underscored fragility of the ceasefire following repeated skirmishes between US and Iran in Strait of Hormuz and with Israel continuing its campaign in Lebanon. Market continues to expect deal will ultimately be reached, though timeline is uncertain and key sticking points (Strait of Hormuz control, frozen assets) remain.
China trade data forecast to show May export growth maintaining recent momentum on front-loading effects caused by Middle East war uncertainty. Import growth similarly projected to have held near April's strong result, driven in part by chip-related imports. Australian consumer and business sentiment surveys may show another weak confidence read amid negative fallout from government budget, cost-of-living living pressures and ongoing Middle East war impacts. Taiwan exports are expected to show another big rise in semiconductor shipments.
