Jun 09 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening steep opening declines in South Korea. Japan and Hong Kong also tracking for early losses while ASX SPI futures flat. S&P 500 futures extending losses afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening, in-line with overnight fall in Treasury yields. Crude up after US struck Iran though gains mild relative to earlier sell-off. Gold and silver down to lowest levels since mid-March. Dollar steady on major crosses. Bitcoin back under pressure.

    • US launched strikes against Iran in response to downing of Apache helicopter in Strait of Hormuz. US officials told Axios strikes targeted Iranian air defense and radar systems, and were limited in scope. Iran's foreign minister acknowledged strikes, stating armed forces would leave no attack or threat unanswered. Latest development seen further clouding timeline for an agreement with access frozen funds, nuclear concessions and Strait of Hormuz control among reported sticking points.

    • Semis back under pressure overnight with SOX ending down 2%, continuing a volatile stretch. No specific catalyst for the volatility amid competing influences from dip buying and unwinding of crowded longs. Pickup in Middle East tensions has also weighed on sentiment along with inflation concerns ahead of US CPI later tonight following hawkish repricing of rate paths. Sell-off spotlights attention on South Korea following Kospi's 8-9% swings in both directions this week driven by the memory majors.
