Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gain in Japan, negative start in Australia and flat start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures little changed afterhours following Monday's semi-led rally (SOX rose 5.5%). FX markets steady with dollar directionless. Crude drifting higher in post-settlement trade after falling to early March low. Gold and silver down slightly. Bitcoin easing from earlier highs.
BOJ expected to raise policy rate by 25 bp to 1.00%. Nikkei preview noting growing views among board that inflation concerns from Middle East conflict are outweighing growth. Deputy Governor Uchida to brief press in Governor Ueda's absence with post-meeting messaging seen shaping debate over timing and pace of future rate hikes. Central bank will also reveal bond plans, which are expected to feature tapering purchases by JPY200B per quarter, leaving monthly pace at JPY2.1T by Mar-27.
RBA expected to leave cash rate unchanged at 4.35%. Governor Bullock had foreshadowed a pause in May after noting policy is well placed to respond to developments following three straight rate hikes. RBA seen acknowledging softness in economic and housing indicators while elevated inflation will keep board alert to upside risks. Bullock is expected to avoid giving forward guidance and instead repeat that board has space to assess how economic situation plays out.
China activity data expected to show retail sales shrunk for first time since lockdowns ended in late 2022, with consumers weighed down by soft labor market and inflation. Fixed asset investment declines forecast to have deepened, partly reflecting adverse weather impacts. Industrial production growth seen nudging higher amid strength in tech-related output. Property metrics expected to remain subdued though recent monthly home price data has shown pace of declines is narrowing.
