  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mostly higher but near the lowest levels of the session. UK (0.4%), Denmark (0.6%) and Norway (2.2%) bucked the positive trend. Autos & Parts, Construction & Materials and Banks were the best performing sectors whilst Oil & Gas, Telecom and Health Care were the big laggards.

    • Markets turned risk-on after the US and Iran confirmed a deal to end conflict, including in Lebanon. MoU will be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland. Trump stated that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will resume without tolls once signed, and US will lift its naval blockade. The agreement includes a 60-day ceasefire, with nuclear issues and sanctions relief to be negotiated later. Trump warned he would resume strikes if no final nuclear deal is reached. Yet, Iran has hinted at possible tolls for safe passage in certain periods.

    • Elsewhere, Trump warned France at risk of a fresh trade war with US unless it axes its digital tax on tech giants. Macron promptly rejected repeal of the tax. In the UK, allies of Manchester mayor Burnham said he is preparing to launch immediate leadership challenge against PM Starmer if he wins Makerfield by-election on Thursday. Thoughts that last week's resignation of defense secretary a game changes and challenge will not be contested. Also of note, G7 draft said members will discuss AI financial risks and tighter regulatory coordination.

    • On macro data front, Eurozone industrial production slightly higher in April, trade balance recorded unexpected deficit. UK Rightmove house price update sees falling in asking prices in June. Central bank policy to dominate this week. Riksbank, SNB, Norges Bank and BoE policy update due. No change in policy expected. Overseas, BoJ expected to hike rates by 25 bps on Tuesday. Fed's Warsh will oversee first meeting as chair. No change anticipated, but there has been a rise in market-implied rate hike expectations into meeting.

    • BoE Governor Bailey defended the BoE's bond-selling policy and said there is misunderstanding over its impact. Think tank ITEM Club expect UK housing market to remain subdued next year.

    • In M&A news, Saint-Gobain (SGO.FP) sold its Dahl specialist distribution business in Sweden, Norway and Denmark to Kesko (KESKOB.FH) for €1.52B (EV basis). In the UK, Elliott Investment Management has reportedly acquired a ~5% stake in Bunzl (BNZL.LN); in Germany, Allianz is likely to be the buyer of HSBC Life Singapore (HSBA.LN). UniCredit (UCG.IM) responded to Commerzbank (CBK.GR) allegations related to its offer and a consortium of Brookfield and pension fund CPP Investments has expressed a joint interest in Uniper (UN0.GR), local press reported. In France, Bouygues (EN.FP) believes that the deal to acquire SFR can win regulatory approval, writes FT citing the CEO.
