Synopsis
European equity markets set to open broadly higher, extending last week's gains when the STOXX Europe 600 closed up +1.69%.
Ahead of the European market open this morning, markets in risk-on mode after US and Iran confirmed deal to end conflict (including in Lebanon) with signing ceremony scheduled for 19-Jun. Trump said Strait of Hormuz shipping will resume after deal signed and without tolls. US will end naval blockade in return. No details on MoU text, which Iran says will be published after signing ceremony. Previous press leaks noted MoU will include 60-day ceasefire extension, during which discussions will be held primarily on issues such as Iran's nuclear program and sanctions relief. Addressing uranium stockpiles and extent/conditionality of sanctions relief remain open questions.
Asian equities rallying Monday after US and Iran agreed to end hostilities. Tech-heavy benchmarks in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan outperforming. Greater China markets also higher in early trade. S&P 500 futures advancing. Bond markets stronger with Treasury and JGB yields declining across the curve. Crude under pressure, near two-month low. Gold, silver and Bitcoin rallying alongside equities. Dollar weakening against euro. Airline stocks likely to be beneficiaries of the sharp drop in oil this morning.
Voters in Switzerland have rejected a proposal to limit the country's population to 10 million (BBC, Reuters ). Results showed nearly 55% of participants voted against and 45% voted for, with a turnout of 60% of the population. The proposal came from the right-wing Swiss People's Party, which has long campaigned on an anti-immigration platform. Reuters notes the vote, which was likened to Britain's 2016 Brexit referendum, had put businesses on edge due to concerns it could end the free movement of labour between Switzerland and the EU, the country's main trading partner.
