Synopsis:
Asia equities poised for a mostly higher open Monday. Futures in Japan flat to higher, Hong Kong firmer, South Korea lower. Japan ADRs were almost all higher on yen tailwinds, while Golden Dragon China index rose 0.70%. US contracts notably gaining following a mildly softer cash session Friday. Most sectors advanced. Tech leads negative on the whole as Nasdaq lagged and SOX index fell a sharp 5.29%. Mag 7 mostly rebounded from prior weakness though broader big tech group lower. US Treasuries were mostly firmer with curve steepening. Dollar index declined 0.1%. Gold finished up 1.2%. Bitcoin futures up 1.2%. WTI crude dropped 3.7%, below $70 at lowest close since late-February.
Oil futures trading higher early Monday after US and Iran extended tit-for-tat strikes in the region that began last Thursday. Yet, US equity futures strength attributed to latest reports indicated both sides agreed to stand down ahead of planned talks in Qatar Tuesday. Outside of Middle East, AI/tech remains the dominant theme. Ongoing attention on SpaceX (SPCX) as Nasdaq confirmed the stock will be added to the Nasdaq 100 index 7-Jul. Regional focus on upcoming announcements from Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) for major investment plans expected to exceed KRW1,000T ($650B) over the next decade; domestic chip cluster highlighted as the core project. Meanwhile, recent AI volatility and broader systematic impacts giving more traction to cautious narratives. Press highlighted the BIS annual report included warnings of AI bubble risk compounded by increasing reliance on debt.
Macro data set to be the main focus this week. Key global release will be US payrolls Thursday. Market sensitivity has skewed hawkish since the recent swing in expectations to rate hikes. Long bond yields also contending with uncertainty after Fed chair Warsh removed forward guidance. China official PMIs Tuesday to provide latest reading on cyclical momentum following recent softness. Industrial profits continued to grow at a double-digit pace through May, while also reaffirming the K-shaped recovery dynamic. BOJ June Tankan will capture the bulk of Middle East impacts, though now more backward-looking given the latest BOJ rate hike and US-Iran MOU.
