  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling big opening rally in South Korea, and initial gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. US contracts up slightly afterhours. Australian bonds rebounding after Treasury yields reversed lower following soft US CPI. Crude near one-month high with WTI back to $80. Gold and silver little changed following overnight rebound. FX markets steady after dollar retreated following CPI. Bitcoin hovering near one-month high.

    • China Q2 GDP growth forecast to have slowed to 4.5% y/y from 5.0% in prior quarter, leaving it at lower end of government's 2026 target range. Weak consumption, housing market slump and investment declines seen as main drags, offsetting contributions from exports and high-tech manufacturing output. June activity indicators forecast to show little change in industrial production, narrower decline in retail sales and deeper contraction in fixed asset investment. Data comes ahead of July Politburo meeting for any stimulus indications after Premier Li on Monday called for stronger counter-cyclical measures.

    • US and Iran locked in tit-for-tat with CENTCOM striking targets in Strait of Hormuz and IRGC firing at US and regional assets across Gulf nations. After announcing resumption of blockade, Trump reversed course on 20% Hormuz shipping fee idea after Gulf states pushed back. Oil remains up ~20% from recent lows with trackng data showing chill in Hormuz shipping flows. Trump rehashed threat to hit civilian infrastructure if Tehran doesn't resume talks though markets still habor doubts current fighting will morph into full-blown war.

    • Momentum rebound in focus with US semis driving SOX up 2.5% following recent selloff. SK Hynix US ADRs surged 27%, building on momentum during Tuesday's Asian session. Continues volatile stretch for memory characterized by large daily swings absent of any fundamental catalysts. Technicals have gotten some of the blame with attention also on outsized influence of leveraged ETFs in magnifying losses. ASML earnings on Wednesday and TSMC on Thursday seen as next potential catalysts.
