Synopsis:
Asia markets pared early losses Tuesday to finish mostly higher. Japan's Nikkei and Topix both closed higher, Shenzhen and Shanghai were also positive while the Hang Seng overturned a 1% loss at the open to close around 0.5% higher. Gains for the Kospi, but the Taiex fell. Australia was flat, India lower on the oil price gain, Southeast Asia mostly higher. US futures mixed, Europe opened lower. US dollar index continues to hover around 101; NZD higher on hawkish RBNZ comments, won also stronger again, others quiet. Precious metals off lows, industrial metals nudging higher. Crude higher in afternoon trade with Brent above $86/bl.
Asia equities bounced back following a weak opening Tuesday as tech stocks turned positive and despite another ratcheting higher in US-Iran hostilities overnight that triggered a 4% gain in Brent and WTI crude futures. Brent now trading above $86/bl for the first time in more than a month while WTI is nearing $81/bl, both triggering a spike in sovereign yields and keeping the US dollar at elevated levels. But AI-related tech stocks bounced back in Japan and South Korea (less so in Taiwan) just as SoftBank's (9984.JP) CEO Masayoshi Son said global AI infrastructure investment would reach ¥800T by 2040.
In other developments, China's imports surged by more than expected and, while imports also increased to give a second-highest trade surplus on record, analysts noted the increase in imports' did not point to a scaled revival in demand. Focus Wednesday to be on China's Q2 GDP growth and June economic activity data. Elsewhere, South Korea's government upgraded its FY26 economic growth outlook to 3%; Singapore Q2 GDP growth eased to 5.7% y/y as oil-linked clusters contracted; Australia consumer confidence improved this month.
ChangXin Memory Technologies (+CXMT.CH) is scheduled to list on the Shanghai stock market from 27th July, according to a Reuters report. Shein's (+SHEIN) softer growth could force it to accept a lower valuation in its upcoming potential Hong Kong IPO, according to analysts cited by Bloomberg. Genesis (GMD.AU ) and Vault (VAU.AU) have agreed to merge to create a $8.7B Australia-based gold producer. Bloomberg reported Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) is in the early stages of consideration over a potential ADR listing in the US. Activist investor Align Partners (0PS50C-E) has proposed the merger of JB Financial Group (175330.KS) and BNK Financial (138930.KS) and has called on a decision by 7-Aug.
