  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed higher and near best levels after recovering earlier losses. Basic Resources, Oil & Gas and Financial Services were the best performing sectors. Media, Health Care and Travel & Leisure lagged.

    • Risk off amid escalating US-Iran tensions after Trump reinstated the naval blockade of Hormuz and announced 20% cargo fees on non-Iranian vessels. Ongoing strikes, IRGC actions against commercial shipping, and reduced flows through the Strait creating persistent supply risks and limited de-escalation visibility. However, spillover effects still seem fairly contained given the track record behind the escalate to de-escalate narrative.

    • In the UK, BRC/KPMG retail sales monitor missed expectations despite World Cup. Barclays card spending data posted fastest increase in 11 months. Also, BoE's Bailey told MPs the breakdown of US-Iran ceasefire increased risks to financial stability. UK PM-in-waiting Andy Burnham vowed to rein in Britain's outsourcing industry and bring more government contracts in-house to increase public control and accountability. Outgoing UK Chancellor Reeves urged adherence to existing fiscal rules.

    • A busy day for earnings saw from the DACHs region, Hapag-Lloyd (HLAG.GR), Evotec (EVT.GR), TRATON (8TRA.GR), and Vossloh (VOS.GR) posting their most recent numbers. In the Nordics Ericsson (ERIC.B.SS), DNB Bank (DNB.NO), Norwegian Air Shuttle (NAS.NO), Avanza Bank (AZA.SS), Lifco (LIFCO.B.SS), HMS Networks (HMS.SS), Dometic Group (DOM.SS), NCC (NCC.B.SS), Xvivo Perfusion (XVIVO.SS) and Fastighets Balder (BALD.B.SS) reported before the open. In the UK, BP (BP.PL), Genus (GNS.LN), Debenhams (DEBS.LN) and Watches of Switzerland Group (WOSG.LN) were the main names reporting.
