Jul 19 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equity market indications mixed and somewhat limited for the Monday open. Futures were mostly firmer -- Japan logged solid gains though market closed Monday for public holiday, followed by moderate strength in Hong Kong and Australia. South Korea markets were closed Friday. Japan ADRs skewed negative, while Golden Dragon China index fell 1.81%. US contracts stabilizing in Asia following broad declines in the main benchmarks Friday. Tech leads were also soft with SOX index down 1.63% and big tech mostly lower, particularly among Mag 7. US Treasuries were mixed with curve flattening. Dollar index was flat. Gold finished up 0.7%; silver was up 0.2%. Bitcoin futures were down 0.1%. Crude oil futures re-opened sharply higher in Asia, extending Friday's rally.

    • Weekend narrative was dominated by reverberations from tech anxiety. Much of the concerns still revolve around South Korea volatility with KOSPI correlating well with SOX index and underscoring structural vulnerabilities from extreme skew to just two companies Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix (000660.KS) which together make up just over half the total weighting, as well as bloated leveraged trading largely via single-stock ETFs tied to these names. Kioxia (285A.JP) volatility also amplified by outsized leveraged positions. China competitive threat took another step up with the launch of Moonshot's Kimi K3 model just as attention on CXMT IPO reached a peak. Recent results from Samsung and TSMC (2330.TT) demonstrated substantial high bar for upside earnings surprises. Capex sustainability also remains a notable risk factor. Furthermore, ongoing US-Iran conflict especially in the Strait of Hormuz driving oil prices back up, permeating to higher bond yields and lower tech valuations.

    • Latest notable regional story was South Korea's details of its plan to internationalize won after having launched 24-hour trading earlier this month. Main upshot has been to clear an MSCI hurdle for ascension to developed-market status. Won convertibility stands to help broader market liquidity via foreign inflows, though no direct implications for tech majors as yet. Looking ahead, US big tech earnings comes into the spotlight starting with SK Hynix preliminary Q2 results and Alphabet (GOOGL) Wednesday. Macro events fairly light in Asia. China LPR fixings Monday though have been a non-event lately. Japan customs trade data coming up Wednesday followed by Bank Indonesia rate decision. South Korea Q2 GDP and Australia employment Thursday. Japan CPI due Friday along with PMIs.
