  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended mixed Monday after a bright start. China's Shanghai boards ended higher on intervention reports while Shenzhen and other tech benchmarks fell again; Hang Seng remained positive. Steep losses in South Korea as it marks-to-market from Friday's tech selloff; more losses in Taipei, Singapore and Mumbai. Southeast Asia mixed. Japan closed for a holiday. US Dow futures higher, Europe opened with gains. US dollar flat, won, AUD and NZD slightly stronger, RBI intervened again to support the rupee. Treasuries and JGBs not trading in Asia today. Crude futures spiked higher at the open but have declined in late trade. Precious metals mixed, base metals near unchanged. Cryptocurrencies under pressure.

    • Asia equities drifted Monday after crude prices gapped higher at the open amid escalating fighting in the Middle East over the weekend and the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude opened at around $90.8/bl and remained close to this level for much of the day while WTI traded at a shade below $84/bl before both fell sharply in late afternoon trade. Investors also cognizant of a list of tech companies due to report this week including Alphabet and Tesla following last week's tech-related selloff as well as several key central bank meetings.

    • Greater China stocks saw a volatile day after reports 'national team' funds were active in buying state-owned enterprise stocks and ETFs; a strong opening was followed by a dip then a rally into the close on Shanghai's main boards while Shenzhen, small cap indices and the STAR index remained negative. Hong Kong stocks were supported by oil & gas, and internet & IT names as its recent revival continued.

    • In stock news, Chinasoft International (~354.HK~) has formally entered into a token revenue-sharing and innovation agreement with Moonshot (~+MOONSHOT.HK~). Samsung Biologics (207940.KS ) is to buy PolyPeptide (PPGN.SW ) in a $1.8B all-cash deal. Hon Hai Precision (2317.TT ) has won an order from SpaceX for more than 13K AI servers worth $52B. Wistron (3231.TT) has acquired an additional 33.3M shares in GEOSAT Aerospace & Technology (0CFXM6-E) for up to NT$600M in cash, and now owns 63%. TSMC's (2330.TT ) CFO said the company's $265B in US spending has been driven by customer demand and to ward off rivals. Moonshot (+MOONSHOT.HK) has told investors it is preparing for an IPO in six months following its recent AI breakthrough.
