Jul 23 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities traded mostly higher Thursday in a broad-based rally. South Korea's Kospi saw the best of the gains with a roughly 4% increase; Japan's Nikkei 225 and Topix were both higher, Hang Seng added to recent gains in an across-the-board rally. Taiwan, Australia and mainland China posted modest gains. New Zealand stocks hit a record high. Several Southeast Asia benchmarks lower although Indonesia back in a bull market. US futures lower, Europe seeing a lower open. US dollar flat Asia currencies weakening in final hour of Asia trade. Treasury and JGB yields higher across tenors. Brent crude 4% higher and now above $98/bl; WTI also higher. Precious metals notably lower. Industrial metals now flat after early rally.

    • Asia equities brushed off a negative first response to after-hours US technology quarterlies posted Wednesday night, as well as another tick higher in oil prices, which is inching its way back towards $100/bl. Alphabet (GOOGL) slid around 3% after hours after saying it would raise capex plans; Tesla (TSLA) was down around 4% as group profits declined and despite robust auto sales; and IBM (IBM) shares also dipped after it cut its FY sales outlook. Analysts said the increase in capex plans could be partially responsible for Asia tech's rally Thursday albeit with some caution ahead of Intel (INTC) numbers tonight, and Meta (META) and Microsoft (MSFT) next week.

    • Overnight, Houthis attacked two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea and Iran Thursday said a tanker had caught fire after attempting a transit through a mined stretch of the Strait of Hormuz. The reports sent Brent to a seven-week high, fueling concerns over regional bond yields and inflation. Precious few signs of a ceasefire breakthrough this week with both sides again swapping missile attacks and bellicose messages overnight. Fed Fund Futures now indicate a 33% chance of a hike next week, and 55% in September while yields in Japan, South Korea and Australia all rose today. In other developments, South Korea's Q2 GDP slowed modestly from Q1 on a y/y basis at 3.7% but still beat forecasts marginally. Australia unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.4%. The RBI said it saw the India economy as resilient despite renewed risks from the Iran conflict and a weak monsoon.

    • Mitsui & Co (8031.JP) and Penske Corp have made an unsolicited and non-binding proposal to acquire the remaining shares in Penske Automotive (PAG) they do not already own. Macquarie Group (MQG.AU ) CEO Wikramanayake is to retire and replaced by veteran insider Ward. Geely (175.HK ) and Ford have agreed to share an under-utilized Spain-based automotive factory. The EU has sent JD.com (9618.HK ) an outline of its objections over its deal to buy Germany's Ceconomy.
