Jul 24 ,2026

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities ended lower across the region Friday. The biggest losses were in the technology-orientated benchmarks in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Shenzhen. The Topix saw more modest losses while Shanghai, Hong Kong and Australia also all fell but were relative outperformers. Southeast Asia was lower, India also trading down. US futures lower, Europe opened with small gains. US dollar dipping slightly with some strength in AUD, NZD and the won. Treasuries and JGBs mixed. Crude lower although Brent still trading just below $100/bl. Precious metals down, base metals also lower.

    • Asia stocks fell across the region Friday as angst over AI tech stocks' valuation and further hostilities in the Gulf weakened investor sentiment. The MSCI Asia Pacific ex-Japan index was around 2.1% lower just before the close in Hong Kong Friday although still ended the week with a small gain. For Friday, there were significant losses in Kioxia (285A.JP), Advantest (6857.JP), SK Hynix (000660.KS), Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), and Nanya Tech (2408.TT) among others. For the week, national benchmarks were mixed with gains for the Topix, ASX, Taiex and Greater China boards; and losses for the Nikkei 225, Kospi, and India's two main benchmarks. Among other Asia asset classes, bond markets saw a reprieve today with yields mixed but ended the week notably higher; currencies were mixed despite the jump in the dollar.

    • Brent crude off its peaks Friday but still close to $100/bl after Trump vowed to punish Iran and the Houthis for any attack in the Red Sea, while shipping data showed Strait of Hormuz transits to their lowest in two months. Meanwhile, there were more warnings from analysts over physical crude stockpiles, which are starting to run dangerously low in places. In regional developments, flash PMIs showed improvement in Australia and Japan but a slowdown in India. Japan June headline inflation jumped but core remained steady and below the BOJ's target.

    • HSBC (5.HK) is to sell its Singapore Insurance unit to Allianz in a deal worth $2.1B. Chipmaker CXMT (+CXMT.CH) is to list and begin trading in Shanghai on 27 July. KCC Glass (344820.KS) is among the shortlisted bidders for Lotte Chemical's (011170.KS) building materials business, according to local media reports.
