Asia equities closed mostly higher Monday. There were broad gains for the Topix, ASX and Hang Seng while the Nikkei 225 and Kospi saw more modest rises. Taiwan's Taiex closed near unchanged. Singapore ended higher after MAS unexpectedly tightened policy; Indonesia's JSX was volatile after its central bank governor resigned and finished lower. India holding on to early gains. US futures indicate a higher open, Europe strong in the first hour of trade. US dollar lower, no movement of note in major Asia currencies. Crude sharply lower with Brent back below $88/bl, WTI below $85. Precious metals higher, base metals higher.
Asia equities in a broad rally following a sharp decline in crude oil prices first thing. Brent and WTI crude futures down around 4.5-5.0% after the US paused on an almost non-stop two-week long series of attacks on Iranian infrastructure, and Tehran said it would refrain from retaliatory attacks and attend mediation talks in Oman. Tech stocks saw a mixed day ahead of quarterly earnings from SK Hynix (000660.KS) (Wednesday), Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) (Thursday), and Kioxia (285A.JP) (Friday).
In other developments, Singapore's monetary authority unexpectedly tightened monetary policy to tame inflation, warning fuel reserves had fallen significantly and inflation would remain elevated into 2027. Bank Indonesia governor Perry Warijiyo resigned for personal reasons, opening up a fresh front in terms of uncertainty for the country's financial stability. China's industrial profits rose 18.7% in Jan-Jun period, a fraction lower than Jan-May, but exports remained resilient. ChangXin Memory (CXMT) (688825.CH) debuted on the Shanghai stock exchange's STAR market and rose 465% by the close, a gain that may encourage other chip manufacturers to list in mainland markets, analysts said.
Seven & i (3382.JP) said it had decided not to invest in Polish convenience store company Zabka as an agreement with the seller could not be reached. The Australian reported Tokio Marine Holdings (8766.JP) is considering acquisition targets including Australia Insurance Group (IAG.AU) and Suncorp (SUN.AU). DeepSeek (+DEEPSEEK) has paused second round fundraising over leaked comments from founder Liang about US-China AI competition, according to Bloomberg. Naver (035420.KS) announced it is to partner with Brookfield and Nvidia on an expansion of South Korea's AI factory infrastructure.
