Synopsis:
European equity markets ended mostly higher with DAX leading gains. Follows positive close on Friday. Sentiment improving on fragile Middle East truce. Media, retail, travel and autos the best performing sectors. Energy, technology and basic resources the main laggards.
On the data front, Germany's Ifo business climate for July beat at 86.6 vs consensus 86.1. Eurozone M3 slightly more accomodative at +3.3% y/y versus 3.2% expected. In the UK, CBI retail sales balance improved to -26 versus -45 expected, but remains deep in a four-year downturn. Eurozone inflation due later this week remains pivotal ahead of ECB's September decision, where a hike is still priced near 90% despite core measures looking sideways; energy prices will be decisive. The BoE meets Thursday and is expected to hold steady while watching inflation risks.
Markets attentive to trading updates from AstraZeneca (AZN.LN), Vodafone (VOD.LN), Michelin (ML.FP), LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (MC.FP) and Rexel (RXL.FP). Other notable companies to update investors on recent trading included Hotchief (HOT.GR), Galp Energia SGPS (GALP.PL), Italgas (IG.IM) and Saipem (SPM.IM).
In M&A, KKR agreed on terms of a recommended cash offer up to 6,797.22p/share (includes dividend) for DCC Energy (DCC.LN), Serica Energy (SQZ.LN) offers 28.6683p in cash, plus 4.0p in cash divi for Pharos Energy (PHAR.LN), Candle Lake Ltd acquires shares in Evolution (EVO.LN) and triggers a mandatory offer obligation as well as Railpen announces it has no intention to make an offer for IP Group (IPO.LN). DKSH Holding (DKSH.SW) to acquire the Meliane oral contraceptive brand from Bayer (BAYN.GR) across 30 markets in Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Elsewhere, reportedly, Banco BPM (BAMI.IM) - MPS (BMPS.IM) deal emerges as preferred strategic alternative to Intesa Sanpaolo (ISP.IM) bid.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, key releases will include, amongst others, France Jul consumer confidence and UK Jul shop price index - BRC.
